Branding Strategy: 5 Things You Must Consider When Trying To Build Your Brand

A lot of entrepreneurs that are new to online business world have the misconception that once they have created a logo and picked brand colors that they have a brand. That is certainly not the end of your brand story, yes these are two very important elements of branding, but these two elements alone are not all encompassing when it comes to your brand identity and overall brand.

In this article, I am going to show you the 5 things you need to do even before you start thinking about your brand logo and color scheme.

1. Mission

Whats your mission or purpose for your business? Yes you want to make a lot of money, but you should not just be in business because you want to make a lot of money. It’s important to establish a clear mission early on to determine the direction of your business. So what’s a mission statement? Your mission statement, “clarifies your overall goals and paths to reaching them. It also exists to “inform strategies and define the reason for a company’s existence.” For example, Tesla’s mission is “To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” Even though Tesla is a car company, there main interest is not about making millions or billions of dollars each year, they are about promoting sustainable energy, and when they sit down to make decisions, there mission, or why they exist, directs their focus and the decisions they make in their company.

2. Vision

As the Bible says without vision the people perish. Vision allows you to see the future and what is possible down the line and not just what’s happening now in your personal life, in your business, and in the economy. Many millionaires right now who have been able to built successful companies, if they were not looking into the future to see what is possible, what the next 10 years could look like and get in front of it, they wouldn’t be as successful as they are today, and many of the things we do enjoy right now, we wouldn’t have them.

Where do you aspire to be in the future? Now that you have your mission statement, you need your  vision statement. Vision statements are future-based and is created to inspire and guide your business objectives and internal decision-making. Rather than focusing on your purpose (your mission), your vision statement focuses on where you want to be in the future. If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you get there?

3. Values

What are your core values as a business and as an entrepreneur? Many entrepreneurs do not know this, but your core values play an integral role in brand management. In fact, they’re the core of it. Your values are your fundamental beliefs that affects the decisions and actions you take. When you are deeply connected to your values, it will guide you in brand decisions and help you stand out from the crowd.

4. Story

Your brand story is basically about how you help people solve problems and alleviate pain points. Your brand story is designed to elicit an emotional response and help your audience relate to you as an entrepreneur or as a business. You have a story, make sure you’re the one telling your it.

Importantly, when you are thinking about your story, remember its not about you or your business, it’s about your customers or clients and the value that they get when engaging with your product or service. Make your customers the star of your narrative and they will love you and want to buy from you.

5. Personality and voice

Every brand has one. Think of your brand as a person with a distinct personality. What are the key personality traits that make your brand different from your competitors? Once you are clear on your brand personality ensure it resonates with customers in all of your communications. When you combine your brand personality traits and your voice – the tone of your communications and the style of your content- your potential clients or customers will begin to form an emotional bond with you.

Now that you have these things in place, you can begin to think about your brand identity: logo designs, fonts, colors, shapes and other visual elements of your products and promotions.

Building your brand can seem like a lot of work, but if you put in the work now, you will reap the benefits later. Your brand is how your customers perceive you (your brand image), and so you are always building your brand even when you think you are not doing that.

Your brand is one of the most important assets you have.
